Dr He provides expert and comprehensive private haematology services including clinical consultation, bone marrow biopsy, chemotherapy, blood transfusion, iron infusion and inpatient care in five private hospitals, namely Epworth Eastern, Knox Private, Ringwood Private, Mitcham Private and Melbourne Private. He is a founding member of Melbourne Haematology, the largest private haematology group in Victoria.
Simon was born in Guangzhou in China. He speaks fluent Chinese including Mandarin and Cantonese. He enjoys a round of golf when he has some spare time.
He graduated from medical school at The University of Melbourne in 1998. He undertook his 4-year blood specialist training in both Austin Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital in clinical and laboratory haematology. He became a Consultant Haematologist in 2007 and is a joint fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He spent two further years in clinical research and was awarded Webster scholarship at Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2007 and Max Whiteside Clinical Fellowship by Leukaemia Foundation (Australia) in 2008. His research interests focused on target therapies in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) especially early phase clinical trial targeting leukaemic stem cells, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) in phase I clinical trial using Navitoclax, autoimmune blood disorders and allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Dr He was first appointed as a Consultant Haematologist in Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2007. His experience includes the laboratory diagnosis of a variety of blood and bone marrow disorders in adults, consultative haematology service in peri-operative management of bleeding, thrombotic complication & transfusion support, and providing specialised treatments for a wide range of serious blood disorders in acute and chronic leukaemias, myelodysplasia, multiple myeloma, lymphomas and aplastic anaemia. In addition, he also specialises in both allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplantation. His other main interests are in autoimmune blood disorders such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), TTP, and atypical HUS.
Currently, he is appointed three public hospital positions. Since July 2016, Dr He has been appointed as the Medical Lead of Bone Marrow Transplant at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer, Wellness and Research Centre (ONJCWRC) in Austin Hospital after the successful establishment of Victoria’s third adult allogeneic transplant unit. He continues as a bone marrow transplant physician in Royal Melbourne Hospital/Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre within the precinct of Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC).
He also works as a senior visiting consultant haematologist in Ballarat Regional Integrated Comprehensive Cancer (BRICC) in Ballarat Hospital. Dr He provides lectures and teaching in medical school affiliated with the University of Melbourne. He is a local examiner for the medical school in University of Melbourne and Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He has involved in a number of multi-centre clinical trials as lead and co-investigators across a range of blood disorders in AML, CLL, ITP, myeloma and graft-vs-host disease. He has also published widely in international peer review journals including early-phase clinical trials in AML and CLL.
He is a member of international and national haematology bodies including American Society of Hematology (ASH), Australasian Leukaemia & Lymphoma Group (ALLG) and Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ).
